Emphasising the need for right injectable drug delivery system in the existing healthcare system, experts deliberated on the advantages of prefillable syringes (PFS) over the conventional vials on the sidelines of Technovation Season 5 organised by US based Becton, Dickinson Company (BD).
This according to experts is more relevant as there are around 48 blockbuster drugs in injectable form out of which 24 are administered through PFS. Around 94 per cent leading global blockbuster drugs are filled in BD Hypak Glass Prefillable Syringe (BD PFS Hypak). BD sells 2.5 billion Hypak syringes annually in a 3 billion market of pre-fillable syringes. It has been able to sell half a million PFS in India alone in the past few years.
Informed Varun Khanna, MD, BD India, "There is a need to bring about newer technologies like PFS as a part of the mission and vision to control hospital associated infections and bring healthcare worker safety apart from strengthening diagnostics in the healthcare systems in India."
Experts deliberated on the need to understand drug safety, drug-container interactions, primary container interactions, device container integration, Human Factors Engineering (HFE) to bring patient centric design and improvement in vaccination with PFS as compared to vials.
Explained Murli Sundrani, business director, BD Medical-Pharmaceutical Systems - India, “BD as a technology and innovation driven organisation has been able to respond to changing market conditions to provide greater value to customers. Uniquely positioned to offer expertise in drug container interactions and container-device integration for a variety of drug therapies, we have able to cater to the diverse needs of the pharmaceutical market.”
BD is working closely with pharmaceutical companies across the globe to ensure continuity of supply and minimal waste, keeping costs in line with customer needs and expectations. BD Hypak has become the preferred medication delivery system by pharmaceutical companies for vaccines, biotechnology drugs and other therapeutic drugs. BD Hypak was the first complete disposable glass syringe, used in a large scale field test of the polio vaccine developed by Dr Jonas Salk in 1954.
BD offers products that include glass PFS, plastic syringes, self-injection devices, safety and shielding systems, and needle technology.
