Abbott announces $20 mn for research

The Australian government will allocate $20 million over the next four years for research collaboration between Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre in AIIMS and the National Trauma Research Institute in Sydney. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott made this announcement on Friday after he was given a tour of the AIIMS Trauma Centre by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.
India and Australia are also exploring cooperation possibilities in preventive healthcare, trauma care, geriatric medicine, diabetes research and mental illnesses.
In his speech, Abbott also mentioned a collaboration in developing a vaccine for malaria. “We come here seeking a partnership, not as an aid giver,” Abbott said.
He also said that the Australia-India Trauma Systems Collaboration aims to reduce the burden of injury in both countries by developing improved systems of care.
Harsh Vardhan spoke of Australia’s deep capacities in tele-medicine. “I have shared with Abbott the optimism evinced PM Narendra Modi in transforming India’s health care system into a modern, affordable and accessible model before the developing world. Among other things, the PM has already cleared advanced secondary and tertiary health care institutions in every state,” he said.
